Workshop on

Due to the growing dependence that government, military and business organizations have on computer networks, protecting these systems from numerous intrusions has become increasingly critical. A single intrusion to a computer network may result in the loss or unauthorized use of large amounts of valuable information and can cause users to question the reliability of all the information on the network. Therefore, the main aim of the workshop on network intrusion detection was to bring together leading figures from academia, military, government and industry to assess the state-of-the-art in the area as well as to explore the applications of data mining to address the problem of network intrusion detection.

The workshop was organized and sponsored by Army High Performance Computing Research Center (AHPCRC) and Army Research Laboratory (ARL) and was held at the H.E.A.T. Center, Aberdeen, MD. The organizing committee consisted of Vipin Kumar (AHPCRC, University of Minnesota), Jack Cole (ARL) and Anthony Pressley (ARL). The workshop had twenty presentations covering various topics from intrusion detection research area organized into six sessions. The workshop ended with the panel discussion related to the current problems and future directions in the work of network intrusion detection.
