Policies

• To receive a grade of S,
  1. An on-campus student should attend 13 of the 14 lectures (a UNITE student should attend 12 of the 13 lectures).
  2. A student should post short summaries for all the lectures, she/he is counting towards fulfilling the previous requirement, in a secure manner using a standard form . This is a password protected form for users with CS accounts .
     Reports are due the day of the colloquium, and should be based on the entire lectures, not the abstracts.
     You may use a worksheet to take notes about the motivation for the topic, key claims and evidence to support the claims. Please do not turn in the sheets. Please bring a copy of this sheet with you to the colloquium for taking notes.
     The reports are in addition to , not in place of, your attendance (e.g. signature on the attendance sheet) in the lecture. UNITE students should talk to their site coordinator to ensure that a local attendance record is maintained.
  
  In case of difficulties with this form, please contact operator ( operator@cs.umn.edu ) via email and copy it to Deb (deb@cs.umn.edu) for help.
• Students may make up one or two missed lectures by viewing their videotapes in entirety in EE/CSci 4-196C and writing 500-word summaries, which should contain substantially more information than the speaker-supplied abstracts. Please use make-up report form to submit the reports. Please contact Computer Science reception (612-625-4002) or write to Christina (cjohnson at cs.umn.edu) to inquire about the procedures to check out and watch the tapes.
  Please do ensure that the person checking out the tapes documents the checkout and check-in times and sends that information to Christina (cjohnson at cs.umn.edu) without delay. UNITE students should work with their local site managers for this purpose.
• If a student misses more than two lectures, (s)he is expected to prepare a 1000 word summary of the recommended readings in addition to viewing and writing about the videotaped lectures. This synopsis of the recommended readings may be submitted to Christina Johnson (cjohnson@cs.umn.edu) via email before the last lecture.
• Rules of common courtesy prevail during lectures, i.e. no eating, no talking, no leaving early, or arriving late. Please switch-off cell phone ringers during the colloquium.
• Following behaviors constitute cheating. Any of these will result in a failure grade
  1. Claiming to attend a lecture without attending it in entirety
  2. Claiming to watch a video-taped lecture without watching it in entirety
  3. Signing attendance sheet for others
  4. Sharing one's report with other students
  and a referral to the department's Scholastic Standards Committee for disciplinary action including possible termination of the student's Teaching or Research appointment.
