RESEARCH INTEREST

I am fascinated by extending database systems and/or crafting novel data platforms that either give a leg up to emerging data-intensive applications (e.g., recommender systems, location-based services), or to scale such applications on new platforms and hardware paradigms (e.g., cloud computing, flash memory storage). Designing highly effective, efficient and scalable systems, as well as establishing the theoretical foundation behind these systems are my primary academic and research endeavors. More specifically, some of my work include the following:

In-Database Recommendation

Building a full-fledged database system that produces personalized recommendations (e.g., Movie Recommendation in Netflix) to end-users. Using SQL to seamlessly integrate the recommendation functionality with traditional relational operators, i.e., SELECT, PROJECT, JOIN.

Location-Aware Technologies

Add location-awareness to exiting computing paradigms. Combining social networking, personalized recommendation, and collaboration technologies on one side with Geo-Spatial and Mobile Technologies on the other side, aka. "The Next-Generation Location-based Services (LBS 2.0)"

Interactive Graph Exploration

Several emerging applications, e.g., Facebook Graph Search, allow users to issue interactive queries over a graph. Building a scalable system that optimizes and efficiently executes ad-hoc (interactive) queries over large-scale graphs.

Spatial Data Management

Extending exiting Spatial Database Index Structures to work on new hardware (flash memory devices). Also, building a tool that allows researchers to generate spatial road network traffic data based on state-of-the-art simulation models.
