Teaching Assistant for Computational
Genomics (Csci 5481)
As part of this assignment I was in charge of grading
assignments, tests and project reports for the class dealing
with introduction to bioinformatics from a computer science
view point. I conducted office hours and also gave a
lecture on protein sequence alignments. I created an assignment based on hidden markov modelling for generation of profiles from multiple sequence alignments
Summer
2005
- Summer
Co-op at IBM , Rochester, MN
As part of summer internship at IBM, I was involved with a
team which dealt with analyzing the performance of Blue Gene
Supercomputer on life science applications. The applications
specific to bioinformatics and other areas of life sciences
were ported, tested, optimized and benchmarked on the Blue
Gene.

Research Assistant for DTC-Mayo Clinic
Collaboration, Rochester, MN
Working with
structured data in the form of lab tests and unstructured
data in the form of physician notes related to patients with
liver cirrhosis. The challenges are dealing with irregular,
temporal data to detect significant patterns in patient’s
history for early detection of disease.

- Research Assistant for
Protein Fold Classification
This work involves use of machine learning tools like support vector
machines and neural networks, to classify proteins into various fold
families. We developed similarity metrics for sequences, so as to
encapsulate the three dimensional structural information based on
multiple sequence alignment profiles.

The project involved creating a
test for students with a Hindi language major. The test consisted of
four sections - reading comprehension, meanings, spellings and
listening comprehension. As part of the listening comprehension I
was supposed to create, write and enact short scripts of day to day
activities in Hindi and set questions based on that.
