Chi-square goodness of fit

1 Categorical Dependent Variable, and 0 Independent Variables

A chi-square goodness of fit test allows us to test whether the observed proportions for a categorical variable differ from hypothesized proportions [13].

For example, let's suppose we believe that the population of Movielens users consists of 10% Hispanic, 10% Asian, 10% African American and 70% Caucasian people. We perform an experiment surveying the ethnicity of Movielens users. The Chi-square goodness of fit tests whether the observed proportions from our sample differ significantly from the hypothesized proportions.

Values to report:

·        (optional) number of values satisfying each condition (e.g. number of study participants from each race)

·        percent of values satisfying each condition (e.g. percentage of study participants from each race)

·        Chi-square statistic

·        degrees of freedom

·        p value
