Website Update

Website Update

As any frequent visitor might notice, I just completely rewrote my website. My old website was based on a pretty ad-hoc combination of raw html and server-side includes for templating. This was a little ugly, hard to maintain, and didn't give me a lot of flexibility or power going forward. Compared to that, my new website is quite the upgrade. Ive moved the website to Pelican, which is a python based static website generator. This gives me a lot better templating, makes updating easier, and gives me more flexibility to do things like use version control. As a side benefit, I can also use themes from Pelican's open source community. Right now I'm using a slightly modified SoMA2 theme.

The other big change is that Ive added a blog. I thought a lot about this decision. While Ive been implicitly in the writing game for a few years now, (click the research link on the left for more information about that) I would still consider myself a novice (and occasionally reluctant) writer. Therefore, the idea of posting my writing publicly (and so close to entering the job market) is a little intimidating. I'm hoping, however, that it pays off in the long run.

The idea behind starting this blog is that it will motivate me to write more regularly. Regular writing is probably the best way to improve my writing skills and develop better habits around how I write. To help keep me motivated, Ive agreed to be part of a blogging challenge with a group of friends in my research lab. Inspired by the Iron Blogger challenge we are going to try to update our blog once a week. Anyone who misses a week will have face a penalty, usually something like pitching 5$ into a shared pool. We haven't settled on a penalty yet, so feel free to contact me with any ideas.

Anyways, with any luck you'll be seeing a lot more updates here in the coming weeks.
