Progressive Representations for Geometry

Hugues Hoppe
Microsoft Research

Geometric models in computer graphics are often described using triangle meshes. Representing such meshes in a progressive format presents a number of advantages. It permits progressive transmission of the model, allows for continuous level-of-detail control at runtime, and offers a reasonably compact storage format. In recent work we have introduced two such formats, progressive meshes and progressive simplicial complexes. In this talk I will review these and related work, and discuss opportunities for future research.
