I'm a fifth year PhD candidate at the Computer Science and Engineering department in University of Minnesota. I'm a member of the Data Management Lab under the management of Prof. Mohamed Mokbel. My broad area of research interest is in databases and data management. My main research topic in my PhD is spatial data management in distributed environments.

Jul 1, 2015:
I had a demo and mini-experimental paper accepted for presentation in VLDB 2015, in Hawaii.

Jun 1, 2015:
I will be presenting a 90-minute seminar titled "The Era of Big Spatial Data" in the IEEE International Conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM 2015), in Pittsburgh, PA. The seminar will be on June 16th at 1:30pm.

Apr 15, 2015:
SHAHED was awarded the best poster runner up in ICDE 2015 in Seoul, South Korea. The poster was selected among 135 posters presented in the conference.

Jan 15, 2015:
An invited paper was submitted to CloudDM co-located with ICDE 2015.

Projects

SpatialHadoop is an extension to Hadoop that enables efficient processing of large scale spatial data. It adds a spatial language, termed Pigeon, spatial indexes, and spatial operations. It ships with a dozen of efficient spatial operations including range query, spatial join, and a suite of computational geometry operations.
Minnesota Traffic Generator (MNTG) is a web service for generating realistic traffic based on well designed traffic generators. We use existing traffic generators such as Brinkhoff generator and BerlinMOD generator. Since these generators are generally hard to setup and use, we build a web service that accepts users requests, generate the data in our own servers, and send an email to the user once the generation is ready with links to visualize and install the generated traffic.
Sindbad is a location-aware social network which takes into consideration the location aspect of users, news items, and other entities in the system as a first-class citizen. For example, the news feed in Sindbad is location-aware which means it gives higher priority to news items closer to user location. Another example is the location-aware recommender which takes the locations of users and items into consideration to give better recommendation.
