The Wedding

A description of the events around our wedding

The following wedding events are scheduled from Saturday, 19th January 2002 until Tuesday, 22nd January, 2002. You are welcome to take pictures at all times during all ceremonies and events.

Saturday, 19th January, 2002

Dinner

Family members and out of town visitors visit and have dinner at Autri's parents' house.

Sunday, 20th January, 2002, Noon

Jurun

(Visit to the bride and her family by the groom's family)

Autri's parents, sister, brother-in-law, and other family members will visit the koina (bride) at her house (Belle View Hotel). The mothers of the bride and groom carry vases and mango leaves, and exchange Tamul (betel nut) and paan (a leaf). Jodi is marked with sindur and given gifts. She does "hewa" to the elders. The families have lunch.

Pani Tola

(The gathering of water)        

The bride's and groom's mothers gather water from the Brahmaputra river in the ceremonial vases for the brides' ceremonial bath.

Sunday, 20th January, 2002, Mid afternoon 

Nuani

(Bathing and preparation of the bride)        

Jodi is prepared for the wedding ceremony. Her family members anoint her face and arms with the beautifying pastes, and also each other. She bathes in the water gathered from the Brahmaputra and from the Fox River.

Houm preparations

(Preparation of the fire)        

The guests will gather at the ceremony site and wait for the groom to arrive. Autri and the groom's party arrive at the site of the wedding. He is welcomed by Jodi's parents, and other family members. Autri and Jodi's dad sit by the site of the fire.

Sunday, 20th January, 2002, 8 p.m. 

Houm

(The Fire ceremony)        

The bride enters and is seated between the groom and her father. Autri and Jodi garland each other as the rituals around the fire begin. They say their vows while walking around the fire seven times. Jodi's brothers offer holy rice to the couple which is then offered to the fire. The bride, groom, and bride’s father kneel in worship. Autri does “hewa” to the elder relatives of Jodi’s family at the conclusion of the ceremony.

Reception with dinner

Guests dine in batches, visit and witness the ceremony.

Tuesday, 22nd January, 2002, afternoon

Family gathers at a feast as Jodi joins Autri's house.

Tuesday, 22nd January, 2002, evening 

Cultural programme

A show-case of classical Indian and local music, featuring premier local musicians, is presented in honor of our visitors.
