a lack of understanding

George-
Just thought you should be aware, G.M. saw me with my bike this morning, and he and I had the following “conversation”:
“That’s really not appropriate you know.”
“What isn’t?”
“You bringing your bike in here…you’re bringing in a lot of dirt”
“That’s why I have a mat.”
“What about downstairs, and in the hallways?”
“Do you really think that’s your job?”
“Yeah, I do. You have to think of it as, what if we all did that?”
“Then the world would be a better place.”
“No, I mean, you coming in here with your bike…I have a nice bike too, but I don’t ride it to work every day.”
“You should.”
“I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“No, you have to think of it as, what would happen if we all did that? People see you come in here with your bike, and they think they can do that too.”
“Great, I hope they do.”
“I mean, what if we all did that?”
“Then we’d have cleaner air.”
“That’s not really the point….”
“No, that exactly the point, actually.”
“Well I’m going to bring it up with M.O….he’s in charge of the facilities around here.”
“That’s fine, he’s seen me with my bike.”
“He has? Well if it’s fine with him….do you know who M.O. is?”
“Yeah he has an office right over there? I mean, you can talk to him if you like.”
“I’m G.M., I’m on the Computer Science Faculty. Nice to meet you.”
“I’m KDR”.

I have not passed through fire and death…..
A few notes:
1. M.O. has actually held the door so I could get my bike through.
2. I rather resent the implication that I would lie about knowing someone just to get off the hook.
3. What I should have said was, the world would be a better place, we’d all have cleaner air, lead healther, happier lives, and maybe not be so dependent on foreign oil.
Next time maybe.
