It is very hard for me to understand that P has the same capacity as I did when I was the same age. If I recall correctly, I thought in much the same way as I do now, but with fewer influences on my analysis patterns. Weird.
In other news, the redwoods are, unfortunately, one of those things you have to actually see to believe. I used to think I could get a good feeling for any place in the world from pictures, but it turns out that’s false. Great. Also, I found myself thinking “wow, this place looks JUST like the forest moon of Endor”. What a geek.

There’s a reason for that: the Endor scenes were filmed in Northern CA. This weekend I went to a wedding in Point Reyes, and the directions we were given told us to take the “forests of Endor” route along Lucas Valley Road. Skywalker Ranch is somewhere around there. My cousin spotted Mr Lucas having breakfast in San Anselmo once.
I felt the same way about redwood the first time I saw them. A picture just doesn’t convey how some of them are so big they won’t fit in your field of vision at all, you have to look both way below you into the valley and way above you to take in the whole tree.
