Ionic radii of some common ions range from C at lower left to S at upper right. Ions are arranged in vertical groups based on charge, from at left to at right. Note that the anions tend to have larger ionic radii than cations. Ions in each of the pairs Si and Al, Mg, and Fe, and Na and Ca are about the same size and commonly substitute for each other in crystal lattices. Radii are expressed in nanometers (nm).
