Computer Science and Engineering

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota is a major midwestern center for leading-edge research and top-quality education in computer science and engineering. In addition to offering the only computer and information sciences doctoral program in Minnesota, it plays a major role as a source of talent, graduates and research for the computer industry, locally and beyond. Currently, as one of the largest undergraduate programs in the Institute of Technology, the enrollment in the department includes nearly 660 undergraduate students in computer science, 240 in computer engineering, and 40 from the College of Liberal Arts who declare computer science as their major. We also have around 250 graduate students in computer science; about half of them are working toward their PhD's, and 75 in the master's degree program in computer engineering. We also offer a two-year professional master's degree in software engineering with a total enrollment of around 77 students. The number of faculty members in the department has been steadily increasing. They are not only providing high quality undergraduate and graduate education to the students, but also are immersed in cutting edge research which covers almost all disciplinary areas of computer science and engineering. They include: software engineering, computer graphics, robotics, artificial intelligence, programming languages, database, human-computer interface, internet technologies, bio-informatics, data mining, computer networks, high performance computing, computer architecture, parallel and distributed systems, theory and algorithms, system software, and several other areas. Most of the research funding is from federal and state agencies, and some from industry. The department has a strong industrial partners program with various collaborative projects with its partners. I am an alumni from the department.

Aikido Club, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities

The word Aikido is composed of three Japanese characters (on right, top to bottom): ai, meaning harmony; ki, meaning spirit or energy; and do, meaning way. Making one translation of Aikido 'the way of spiritual harmony.' Like other martial arts Aikido is studied for self-defense and self-improvement. What makes Aikido different from other martial arts is that an Aikidoist develops methods of self-defense that will not injure an attacker. The movements of Aikido harmonize attacks rather than meeting them head-on. Instead of using kicks and punches that could possible seriously injure someone, an Aikidoist learns to use various wristlocks and throws to control attackers. As a result techniques can be practiced at full power without fear of injury. In Aikido there are no competitions, the Aikidoist betters his or her self without belittling others. I was the president of the club.
