If change is sometimes for the best, does that mean major changes are even better? Either way, I made a huge decision over the break. I decided to change research areas. Although I will always maintain an interest in robotics, I came to the realization that the root of my interest was in how robots interact with humans, not in the nuts of bolts of robot design and low level programming. With that realization, I have now changed research groups and am now working with GroupLens. The field of Human Computer Interaction continues to excite me with each paper I read, and oddly enough I even have a very tentative thesis outline involving the advancement of dynamic task and time management. In addition to my research, I'm currently enrolled in the 8000 level HCI seminar class, which is not only providing a great overview of the field but is also sparking countless research ideas. I'm still TA'ing our introductory computer science class, 1901, which is taught in Scheme, and I'm also still serving as head TA and guiding Student Feedback with Consensus (SFC) sessions for other TAs seeking to improve their TA skills. The textbook is slowly but surely getting done. I can't believe we've been working on it for over 1.5 years. On top of all that, I'm still hoping to finish my orals over the summer and graduate in May 2009.
