The HMS Pandora, a Barnard built 24-gun frigate, was sent in pursuit of Fletcher Christian's Bounty mutineers. In 1791 when homeward bound and with 14 mutineers successfully captured, she struck part of the Great Barrier Reef . Unlike the majority of ships which ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef , the Pandora did not break up. Refloated by her crew, she later sank in the Torres Strait virtually intact and settled into the sea bed.  Her captain and 98 others then sailed 1,200 miles to a Dutch settlement in Timor in four of the ship's boats.

In 1977, one hundred and eighty six years later, explorers discovered the wreck 150 kilometers east of Cape York . She is reportedly sitting on sand in approximately 30 meters of water. Many artifacts were recovered including the surgeons watch from the site.

Model

I purchased the HMS Pandora in the spring of 2002, and have been working on it since. This is my first time building a model ship, so work has been slow. I try to spend a good deal of time researching the proper rigging of ships of that period. Through this research, I have found the HMS Pandora instructions by Constructo somewhat lacking. Much of the customization I've made to this model has been due to the book "Historic Ship Models" by Wolfram Mondfelt.

A word of advice to other modelers, if you're looking at the pictures below for advice on how to proceed on your own model remember that in some cases I have strayed quite far from the instructions. Sometimes, this is due to what I believe an error or omission. In others, I'm just trying to cover my mistakes ;) If you're having a hard time figuring out what I'm doing in the pictures, please feel free to ask. I've asked plenty of questions to more experienced modelers in my time working on this ship.

In response to some of the questions I've received regarding building the Pandora, I have helped build a web page to answer modelers questions. Dry Dock Models has a forum and image gallery that are intended to help both new and old modelers. There are already a couple of threads regarding the Pandora, so please check it out!
